By switching to the ARM architecture for its computers, Apple is separating from Intel, but could also leave AMD. Indeed, macOS version arm64 would not support AMD GPUs. It is therefore not surprising that Apple is working on its own graphics chip.
According to Taiwanese newspaper China Times, Apple’s GPU is currently under development and has the code name Lifuka. It would be produced by TSMC with 5nm engraving technology, also used for Apple’s future ARM A14X processor. The graphics chip would offer a better performance / watt ratio and would use a mosaic rendering technique (tile-based rendering in English), currently used in GPUs for smartphones.
Apple’s GPU is not expected to arrive before the second half of 2021, in new iMacs. We will therefore have to wait …
