After Acer and Lenovo, it’s up to Asus to unveil its new high-end ZenBook computers which will arrive in stores by the end of the year. The vast majority of these laptops run on Tiger Lake, the new processors that Intel has just unveiled. Some of these models are already available for pre-order in the United States, which means that they will soon be on the shelves in our regions. According to the French spokespersons for the brand, however, we will have to wait a few more weeks.

Four major references are on the program for this new school year: the ZenBook S, the ZenBook Flip S, the ZenBook 14 and 14 Ultralight and the Pro 15. All will be available in several versions, of course, but it is on the S that we will mainly shine the spotlight, because it is the one that caught our attention the most.

Asus puts the package on the screen of the ZenBook S

The 2020 ZenBook S (UX393) does not break with tradition and its origins. It is an ultraportable 13.9-inch PC with a metal finish of an alloy of magnesium and aluminum, black in color enhanced by a thin copper-colored border.

This one which runs as well on the internal plate as on the external edges of the screen. According to Asus, the case of this magnificent machine weighs only 1.35 kg and its thinness does not exceed 1.57 cm at the highest.

No compromises were made on the screen. An example ? The slab frame has ultra thin edges. Asus has still found room for the webcam on the top edge, that’s good.

The (touch) screen is in 3: 2 format, fans of a large workspace and display will appreciate. Another important point: the machine rises and tilts slightly forward when the screen is deployed. This increases the comfort of typing on the backlit keyboard or gliding over the touchpad. This can, on occasion, turn into a touchscreen numeric keypad as on the VivoBook S 2020.

The maximum definition announced is 3300 by 2200 pixels and when it comes to colorimetric specifications and certifications, Asus has seen it big. The screen would be very bright (500 cd / m2), Pantone Validated, 133% compatible with sRGB standard and 100% compatible with DCI-P3. With all of these, content creators are likely to see him as a very good working machine when they are on the move between shoots.

The 2020 ZenBook S, in technical specifications

To run the most demanding apps as well as the most traditional ones, Asus relies – as we said – on the power of the new Intel Tiger Lake chips. increased computing power, a brand new graphics architecture and controlled consumption are the three pillars of these Core processors.

Thus, according to the references, the Asus ZenBook S 2020 will be equipped with:

  • Processors : Intel Core i5 or i7 (references not communicated)
  • Memory : up to 16 GB of LPDDR4x (4266 MHz) soldered to the motherboard
  • Graphics : integrated controller Intel Xe architecture
  • Storage : up to 1 TB of SSD in PCIe NVMe
  • Connectivity : Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, 2 x Thunderbolt 4, 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1, 1 x HDMI 1.4, 1 microSD card reader and a USB-C / 3.5 mm jack adapter
  • Autonomy : up to 12 hours
  • Dimensions and weight : 30.6 x 22.4 x 1.57 cm / 1.35 kg

Regarding the battery, Asus indicates that it is compatible with its in-house fast charging technology and that it can also be recharged with an external battery via one of the USB Type-C sockets.

Finally, Asus announces that among all the new ZenBooks, several are awaiting their certification with the specifications of the Intel Project Athena which is now known under the trade name EVO.

A big software suite, with a little AI in it

Asus also announces the implementation of a whole bunch of home software in the ZenBook. A few use smart algorithms to serve you better. For example, there is the cancellation of ambient noise when you are in a video conference, with intelligent detection of your voice to better highlight it. We can also mention, again for video, a process that blurs the background, to a greater or lesser extent depending on the lighting in the room and your distance from the camera. Finally, Asus seems to have optimized the way the Wi-Fi module connects: it will always look for the access point with the best speed (WiFiSmartConnect).

Asus has also redeveloped its entire suite of tools (MyAsus) which allow you to control the machine in a few clicks (ventilation, update of drivers, contact with support). The brand has brought them together in a single portal, whose interface seemed very clear and respectful of the aesthetic codes of Windows. To appreciate and experience during a test.

All of the ZenBooks mentioned here will be available in the last quarter of this year. ZenBook S and Flip S will be offered from 2000 euros. The ZenBook 14 Ultralight will be sold from 1600 euros. Prices for the classic ZenBook 14 and ZenBook Pro 15 have not yet been communicated to us.
