Iliad, the parent company of Free, announces its intention to buy Polish operator Play for 2.2 billion euros. It has launched a public offer for this purpose.
Play, founded in 2007, is the leader in the mobile market in its national territory with 15 million subscribers, more than Free and its 13.4 million mobile customers. If we add fixed and mobile together, Free would thus become the sixth European operator, also including its activities in Italy.
Xavier Niel shareholder of several foreign operators
Play would complete Free Mobile’s European hunting picture, which entered the Italian market in 2018 with its subsidiary Iliad Italia. But this is not the only presence of the French operator outside our borders because Iliad is interested in the capital of Free Senegal.
Note also that its founder Xavier Niel has invested in numerous operators around the world. He is the majority shareholder of the Irish operator GoMo, shareholder of Telma in the Comoros and Mayotte, also owns the Swiss ISP Salt Mobile, as well as Monaco Telecom which is the sole shareholder of MTN in Cyprus, as well as of Roshan Telecom in Afghanistan. . He finally invested in MyRepublic in Singapore.
The attempt to failed takeover of T-Mobile by Free in the United States in 2014 seems to be just a bad memory.
