To learn better basketball skills, basketball players must first understand and master the basics of the game.

In basketball, there are 6 different core skill areas players should focus on in training.

Dribble

Dribbling the basketball is done to move the ball only when a pass is not a better option and a lane is not available. Beginners and experienced players make the mistake of dribbling the ball when not necessary. Ask any collage or professional basketball coach – they’ll all tell you the same thing. Dribbling should be done when the player (you) have a goal to complete. Dribbling while looking for an offensive option is a good way to lose the ball. When looking for this option, take the ball firmly and place your body between you and the defender. Regardless of your ability to dribble, the defense will always have a better chance to fly if you dribble the ball instead of grabbing it with both hands.

Who passed

Passing is option number 1 for moving the ball on the court in attack. Passing is faster than dribbling and so it’s a deadly offensive tool to get to that open man so he can get the shot. Good passes are the hallmark of good teams because most offensive plays are set up by good passes.

Turning

Shooting is probably the most practiced skill for both beginners and experienced players. Yet so many people still practice it poorly. In practice, all drills should be performed at play speed and as you would under pressure. Players are generally too lazy to do this and instead of practicing the gentle leap that they constantly do in the game, they laze it down to a jump shot. Instead of jumping to give power, they use their arms for power and the legs give the rest. Practicing the wrong way of shooting is something players do all the time but they don’t understand why they miss all their jumps during the match …

Bouncing

The rebound can take two forms: offensive and defensive. A lot of new players look at the rebound and immediately think it’s a great area for men. This is however not the case. Bouncing is more than being big. It even surpasses the ability to jump. To be good at rebounding, you need skill and dedication. Skill is primarily the ability to position yourself and read blueprints – something that comes quickly with practice. Dedication is probably the most important factor in the rebound. The person who receives the ball is the one who is hungry for the ball the most and is willing to do whatever it takes to get it.

Offense

Offense is a fundamental element that encompasses all aspects of offensive court. Shooting has already been covered (and is covered in more detail in the basketball website below). Still, getting out of the ball to give the player with the ball attacking options is another essential thing for a good offense. Supporting your teammates with screens and being able to locate the best offensive option and send the ball to them are also essential things in attack. These skills are often overlooked.

Defense

The best defensive teams in the NBA are often the ones that advance to the playoffs. It shows year after year, so a simple conclusion can be drawn here: Defense is the key to victory. Defense is not just about stealing or blocking, but also intimidating opponents.
