Basketball is a sport played between two teams normally composed of five or more players. Each team has five players on the basketball court at one time. The goal is to score more points than the other team, the points being scored by shooting a ball through a basketball hoop (or basket), located ten feet above the ground. The two teams shoot on opposite goals. To move in possession of the ball, a player must dribble or bounce the ball.
The number of points awarded to a player for successfully shooting the ball into his team’s goal varies depending on the circumstances. The most common scenario is a two-point game, in which a player scores two points for making a basket anywhere inside the “3-point line” while the ball is in play. A semi line. -circular (the three-point line) marks the area beyond which, if a player makes a basket, three points are awarded for shooting. A point is awarded to a player after successfully completing a free throw or free kick.
During play, the referees monitor play and call for fouls, which result from one player illegally interfering with another during the match. For example, if someone pushes a player from the other team while they are shooting, a foul is called. In this situation, the shooter is allowed to shoot two free throws from the foul line without being guarded. Some examples of fouls that can be called in basketball are:
- To hook
- On the back
In addition to fouls, players can also be penalized for other basketball rule violations, such as travel, which occurs when a player takes more than one step with the ball without dribbling or shooting. Such violations result in turn-over, with the ball being given to the other team.
Defensively, a team can take possession of the basketball in several ways in order to score. Offensive fouls (such as charging) cause the defensive team to receive the ball. Unforced reversals, such as when the attacking team moves or throws the ball out of bounds, also results in the defensive team receiving the ball. If the offense misses a shot and the defense rebounds from the missed shot, the defensive team becomes the offense. In addition, the defense can steal (without committing a fault) the ball from the attack.
