Microsoft has heard complaints from users on accidental installation of Office webapps in Windows 10. The publisher has just announced that it is pausing this operation and that it was partly an error.
A few days ago, several users saw their Windows 10 machine restart unexpectedly. They then noticed the presence of Office webapps in the Start menu. These webapps (PWAs) are lightweight web versions of Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. They run in the Edge browser.
Initially, Microsoft places Web shortcuts to programs in its Office suite on the Start menu. These entries turned into webapps due to a bug in a migration operation.
Microsoft had in fact planned to change the shortcuts to websites in the Start menu, to make them more visible tiles. This change transformed shortcuts to Office applications into webapps.
On the other hand, Microsoft did not indicate why the PC had to restart without the user giving their approval and why the Edge browser is still launched if another program was chosen as the default browser.
