In the world of cinema, the Pixel 5 would be presented as a “reboot” rather than a “sequel”. Indeed, according to the technical sheet of the device obtained by our colleagues from WinFuture, Google has decided to take a new direction with its new flagship smartphone. The Pixel 5 will not compete with the iPhone 12 and Galaxy S20 and will target a less elite clientele. This should allow the American brand to market it for 629 euros, against 769 euros for its predecessor.
A very classic recipe
Forget about high-end processors, you’ll have to do with the mid-range Snapdragon 765G this year. 5G compatible and paired with 8 GB of RAM, this chip should give the Pixel 5 the right balance between performance and good power management. We can therefore hope for greater autonomy than that of the Pixel 4 which, let’s face it, was calamitous. Google has chosen to use a 4080 mAh battery with its new device and would be satisfied with an 18W wired charge in addition to wireless charging.
Let’s talk about wireless charging support. At the risk of surprising you, it is a miracle! Indeed, the back of the Pixel 5 is made of recycled aluminum … a material normally incompatible with this technology (Qi charging heats the device, which metal does not like). We can’t wait to see how Google did it.
Up front, the Pixel 5 ditches the Pixel 4’s 3D facial recognition and motion sensor for a simple little punch. The Pixel 5’s 6-inch OLED screen is therefore perfectly edge to edge. It also benefits from a refresh rate of 90 Hz. However, do not expect to find a fingerprint sensor under the screen, Google has housed one on the back of the device. We go back to the design of the Pixel 3, as if the Pixel 4 had never existed.
Finally, on the photo side, Google retains its iconic 12 Mpix sensor boosted with artificial intelligence. The brand nevertheless chooses to abandon the telephoto lens of its Pixel 4 to instead implement an ultra-wide angle attached to a 16 Mpix sensor, a first for a smartphone signed G.
It is on September 30 that Google will unveil its Pixel 5, in addition to a Pixel 4a 5G with the same processor but less well equipped (a single camera, no wireless charging etc.). Will these devices allow Google to finally take market share? We want to believe it.
