An All-State guard in high school, James Toney, was offered a basketball scholarship to play at Seton Hall. James struggled with drug addiction. In 1973, he was jailed for drug possession while his son was still a child. When released, James agreed to relinquish parental visitation rights to his son’s stepfather, Philip A. Harrison, and his mother, Lucille.
At 21, her stepson wrote: “When my mother needed someone 21 years ago, Philip Harrison was the man … My father joined the military when I was two years so that he can live better and also so that he can find us outside the neighborhood. I was born two years before my parents got married. “In an interview, he said,” Just because you bring a child into the world doesn’t make you a father. “
Sergeant (Sgt) Harrison watched his stepson leave the house on his first day of school. He was the one who admired his elementary school artwork on the refrigerator. Sgt Harrison is the one who disciplined his stepson. He saw his first basketball dunk. Sgt Harrison eventually moved his family to Wildlflecken, Bavaria, Germany, where he was stationed as a drill instructor. Even after stepping into her stepson’s life, her stepson used to act and get in trouble.
Life for her stepson was difficult, but Sgt Harrison was finally able to help her stepson turn his back. While living in Germany, he continued to rebel (fight, beat teachers, break into cars, etc.) in the hope of being returned to the United States. Sgt Harrison ended this dream by telling his stepson, “Look, son, now count what you do, I won’t let them fire you. And if you don’t listen to me, I will fight you. buttocks. Every … single … day. “
