the strange Belkin and Devialet speaker, hidden under a wireless charging dock


A speaker that is used to listen to music, but not only. With the SoundForm Elite, Belkin combines its historic skills with Devialet. The result: a speaker fitted atop a Qi-compatible wireless charging cradle.

The latter is a 10 W model which corresponds to the brand’s mid-range. Belkin does indeed design 7.5, 10 and 15 W induction chargers. The speaker therefore does not offer the most charging power offered by Belkin. Too bad this is not the case on a device at 300 euros.

Its positioning at the top of the device makes it very easy to access, but gives a strange design to the speaker which seems to be somewhat cut off from its top. The lower part is more classic, dressed in a mesh fabric like many of its competitors, starting with the HomePod.

Devialet’s patented technologies

Setting up the speaker is relatively straightforward and goes through Google’s Home app. All the possibilities offered by the Google Assistant are therefore accessible, whether they are musical (music search, playback control, etc.) or broader (home automation, questions of general knowledge, etc.).

The purely audio part was therefore designed in collaboration with Devialet. The French brand is currently increasing partnerships in this direction. We remember in particular its successful association with Huawei for the Sound X. The Belkin speaker features patented technologies from the hexagonal company such as Speaker Active Matching (SAM) which adapts the audio signal to the characteristics of the speaker; or the “Push-Push” architecture which places the woofers back to back to avoid too much vibration of the device.

Sound quality below expectations

Unfortunately, we are a little disappointed by the integration of these technologies into the SoundFrom Elite. The rendering is not up to a speaker at 300 euros, or even 250 if we deduct the price of the wireless charger. Certainly, as often with Devialet, the bass is present and very present. But the speaker is penalized by a deficit of midrange frequencies and even more so of high mids.

The result is a real hollow feeling, especially on songs with vocals. These lack substance and struggle to convey all the emotion necessary for a song. The speaker then catches up on the highs to emphasize the details a little more, in frequencies too high overall to completely make up for the lack of high mids.
