Last year Roborock left us hungry with a, high contrast, S5 Max. The Xiaomi-owned brand has decided to step up a gear on its latest model, the S6 Max V (V for video) by giving it not only a camera, but also more power.
More sensors, fewer problems
With the S6 Max V, Roborock hasn’t really changed his recipe. Apart from the dual front camera installed on the front, the design is in all respects identical to previous generations. The saucer-shaped robot vacuum is still topped by a rangefinder that brings the total height of the machine to 9.6 cm. In other words, it will be very difficult for the last of the Roborocks to get under most of the furniture.
Cameras for better suction, really?
For a robot vacuum cleaner, successful vacuuming is not just a passage during which the gagdet would have removed most of the dirt. A successful aspiration is also, and above all, a program that is coming to an end.
Indeed, very often during our tests, we find our rolling saucers stuck between the legs of a chair, stuck in a wire or simply in agony, trying to return a Lego. This is where the interest of this dual front sensor lies, the main novelty of this new model. Indeed, with a better vision, the robot vacuum cleaner is able to more easily detect the various obstacles in its path, to slow down when they approach or simply to go around them.
In this regard, it is also possible to allow the S6 Max V to take pictures of obstacles it finds in its path to better identify them. Given the poor quality of the sensor, these are not always identifiable.
Nevertheless, detection and circumvention go smoothly. Although improving on this, the Xiaomi Ecosystem Vacuum is unable to detect even the smallest objects (less than about 3cm in height) and remains vulnerable to wires and other chargers. The new version of the Roborock application makes it possible to view the location of each obstacle on a map and thus to realize the various difficulties encountered by the robot.
Finally, the addition of the camera functionality allows Roborock to provide an additional functionality, real-time video. In other words, the user can remotely connect to his robot to check what is going on at home when he wants, as he would with an IP camera. Again, this is a rather incidental function as the image quality leaves much to be desired.
Until then, Roborock had never shone with the suction power of his robots. This S6 Max V stands out on this point by being not only more powerful but above all more efficient on suction. Obviously, the robot vacuum cleaner is most comfortable on hard floors. Conversely, as the carpet thickens, its performance decreases. Overall, the suction quality is excellent and the latest Roborock is really working.
On the other hand, the mop functionality still seems so anecdotal to us. On this point, the S6 Max V does neither better nor worse than the competition, insofar as it offers exactly the same thing. That is, a light rubbing with water on the surface it cleans.
The application in progress
Weak point of previous generations, the application has finally been reworked. Roborock offers the classic, an overview of the different passages of the robot, programming of its various cleaning operations as well as the management of more advanced parameters (suction power, washing, exclusion zones).
The novelty is that now the same robot is able to manage four different planes, that is, four different floors where it was limited to one level before.
Above all, without having radically changed its design, the application has become clearer, easier to use and above all more responsive. Here again, without revolutionizing the genre, Roborock is catching up to reach a more than satisfactory level.
