IOS updates over Wi-Fi are over. Well, almost: when 5G will be available everywhere. Future users iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max – all 5G compatible – will then be able to use the new generation mobile network to download the patches and future big updates to the iPhone operating system. The information is present in a document published on Apple support and identified by our colleagues at MacRumors.
To take advantage of this possibility, which calls on the high-speed mobile network, simply go to the menu Settings> Cellular network> Network usage options on the screenshot above and activate the mode ” Allow the use of more data in 5G “.
It is only on this condition that the iOS updates can be transferred to the terminals. We also notice that this mode brings significant improvements to the quality of FaceTime, or the streaming of content from Apple TV or Apple Music.
In France, like frequency band auctions ended a short time ago, the massive deployment of 5G has not yet started.
Many iPhone 12 users will therefore remain connected to 4G for the moment and will not have access to this option. Wi-Fi will remain the only way to update iOS. As soon as they subscribe to a 5G package and are in a covered area, the floodgates will be open. All you have to do is make the appropriate setting and take advantage of one of the benefits of 5G.
